The Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (Fh-ITEM) has a long-lasting expertise in the toxicology of particles and fibers. The target organ is the respiratory tract after inhalative uptake of aerosols – both, pharmaceuticals or workplace-related chemicals. Regarding particulate matter engineered nanomaterials are in the focus of research for 10 years now. At Fraunhofer ITEM, in vitro cell models are used for screening approaches; in addition, in vivo tests are conducted, in particular inhalation studies in rodents. Study types are i.) typical registration tests orienting at existing guidelines or ii.) studies with sophisticated experimental designs addressing research topics. Furthermore, risk assessments and the submission of ECHA registration dossiers are offered. For public or industrial sponsors, numerous studies have been successfully conducted (e.g. with CNT, SiO2, ZnO, CeO2).
